The transducer tip must be covered with an ultrasound coupling gel and then held in place with a protective sheath (condom) or other commercially available probe cover. Non-latex sheaths are available for women with a latex allergy. If a condom is employed for an infertility related ultrasound then only a condom without spermicidal agents is appropriate.
A small amount of conductivity gel or lubricating gel can be applied to the outside of the probe cover. This is generally not done for infertility ultrasounds since these gels often reduce sperm motility.
