Single dose medications for parenteral (not oral = not in or through the digestive system) administration are often packaged in ampules (small sterile glass containers).
Ampules (ampoules) are marked to facilitate opening. There is usually a dot located next to the region along the neck of the ampule that has been scored (cut). The ampule is snapped open by applying pressure away from the scored region. Care should be exercised to avoid cutting one’s self on the broken glass, either by keeping the fingers away from the neck of the ampule or by wrapping the neck of the ampule with an alcohol pad.
